In February 2025, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy engaged in negotiations with the United States over a proposed $500 billion mineral rights deal. The U.S. suggested that Ukraine’s $100 billion in aid from past years could be repaid by granting American companies access to its rare earth minerals. However, Zelenskyy firmly rejected this, stating, “A grant is not a debt,” and insisting that Ukraine would not recognize or repay the amount as a loan.
Zelenskyy is pushing for better terms, including stronger security guarantees and NATO membership, as part of any agreement. He also expressed frustration over increasing pressure from the Trump administration and questioned the fairness of linking military support to economic concessions. Meanwhile, President Trump has hinted at discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding ending the war, further complicating Ukraine’s position. Despite the tensions, Zelenskyy has signaled that he may step down if it ensures Ukraine’s future security and stability.
